About Joan Gregerson & Climate Action Homes

Joan Gregerson
Joan gregerson, ECO-NUT

Ever since I was a kid, I have felt at home in nature. I've always felt a deep appreciation for our Mother Earth that sustains us, so generously providing us with the air, land, and water we need to live each day.

Now, at age 61, I know full well that if we don't prioritize caring for the planet, our success in other areas is fruitless. We can find ways to prioritize protecting the environment, while creating places where our families can thrive, while we prosper financially.

My focus with Climate Action Homes is People, Planet, and Prosperity. I am committed to helping each client find the home they love and making a positive impact while doing it.

Other species have figured out how to live in harmony with nature. We can do it, too. These past few decades have demonstrated the cost of inaction, while also showing the incredible ingenuity and creativity of humankind.

Real estate is one of the largest investments in many people's lives. It's a powerful opportunity to invest in and create the world we want for ourselves and generations to come. We can do this!

I DIDN'T REALIZE IT then, BUT MY COURSE WAS SET BY AGE 10.

My dad was a petroleum engineer. I began 'working' for him at age 10 in 1970. My job was plotting oil and gas production data. I earned $1 for every graph I completed. After plotting the known data on logarithmic paper, we would extrapolate out to zero. By the end of the first day, I realized that oil and gas run out!

My first poem was published also when I was 10 years old. It was about the Brown Cloud, Denver's visible air pollution problem that was disturbing to me even as a kid.

1970 was also the year of the first Earth Day. Tens of millions of people came out into the streets to demand that we take better care of our rivers, our air, and our communities.

As a result, the EPA was formed and the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act were passed under a Republican administration. That demonstrated that when people get together, they can make a difference.

In 1972, the crew of Apollo 17 took this striking photo of earth. This "blue marble" shot showed us then and reminds us today of our fortunate lot to be gifted life on this special place we call Planet Earth.

In 1978, President Jimmy Carter visited Colorado to commemorate the opening of the Solar Energy Research Institute.

All of these experiences solidified my goal of protecting the planet. Following in my dad's model, I figured engineering must be the way to go.

building energy engineering & sustainability

In 1982, I graduated from the University of Colorado and started my first job as an engineer. For the next 20 years, I worked on ways to reduce the energy use of homes and commercial buildings through energy-efficient design and renewable energy.

Long before solar panels on roofs were cost-effective, we worked to help architects and cities understand how design choices and building codes impact energy usage. I worked on the first Colorado Home Energy Rating System (HERS) in 1988, as well as other rating systems across the country.

In 2004, I got certified as a practitioner of the US Green Building Council LEED rating system, and later helped develop guidebooks for deploying these systems in Colorado. In 2017, I was trained as a Climate Reality Leader.

In 2017, I began working as a solar designer and solar sales consultant. I was happy to finally be able to help people get solar... something I'd dreamed of for decades.

COMMUNITY ORGANIZER, NONPROFIT FOUNDER, AUTHOR

In 2014, I 'accidentally' started an environmental profit initially known as Sustainable Revolution Longmont. In this process, I discovered how community organizing can sometimes do what a technical solution cannot. In less than two years, our group came together, and got the city to work with a sustainability consultant. The city adopted a Sustainability Plan, then hired a Sustainability Coordinator. Longmont stepped up as a leader, signing the "Ready for 100" renewable energy pledge long before Denver did.

In 2015, I also got certified as a Holistic Health Coach. I saw that coaching was the secret ingredient for helping so many individuals and communities transform. I began applying the coaching paradigm to environmental work and things began to take off.

In 2018, I started a project called Green Team Academy. I was frustrated that we as a whole were losing our quest to care for the planet. Pollution, climate change, wildlife decline, deforestation, ocean acidification and other issues were accelerating, rather than being solved.

I realized that the environmental moved had failed. The messaging about sending money, signing petitions and memorizing recycling rules was leaving people feeling defeated and on the verge of losing hope.

In 2020, I wrote the book, Climate Action Challenge: A Proven Plan for Launching Your Eco-Initiative in 90 Days. We hosted the 1st Annual International Climate Action Challenge and by the end of 2020, our teams had planted 43,000 trees, started 55 gardens and two urban farms, and started community groups around the world.

In 2021, Green Team Academy became a nonprofit. 75 teams from 28 countries participated in the 2021 challenge. Together they planted 150,000 trees, started 130 gardens and three urban farms, and removed 48 tons of debris from waterways.

At the end of 2021, I stepped down and now serve as advisor to the new team taking Green Team Academy forward.

your eco-focused real estate partner

I received my real estate license in 2021. I initially worked for Your Castle Realty and changed to eXp Realty in 2022. I love being surrounded by a team of experts that I can work with to deliver the top service that my clients expect and deserve.

I also became a grandma in 2021. I keep the younger generations in mind when I think of wise investments and prosperity.

I host the weekly Climate Action Homes Podcast to showcase the basics and innovative strategies to create your own home and care for our shared home, planet earth.

You'll also be invited to join our community. We are collaborating to help each other excel, to push beyond the limitations that might hold us back if we try to each go it alone.
